Anti-slip control ASC

Anti-slip control ASC

ASC does not allow the loss of traction of vehicles with the road surface. The mechanism of operation is that the device controls the towing of the wheels of the driving axle. According to its characteristics, the anti-slip control is an electro-hydraulic mechanism.

Among all models of anti-slip control you can find different names. Everything depends on the brand of vehicles and the manufacturer:

  • ASR (Automatic Slip Regulation, Acceleration Slip Regulation) – is installed on Mercedes, Volkswagen, Audi and other representatives.
  • ASC (Anti-Slip Control) and DTC (Dynamic Traction Control) are widely distributed on BMW brands.
  • A-TRAC (Active Traction Control) and TRC (Traking Control) are mounted in Toyota vehicles.
  • DSA (Dynamic Safety) can often be found on Opel vehicles.
  • ETC (Electronic Traction Control) are included in the design of the Rover Rover.
  • ETS (Electronic Traction System) is an obligatory element of Mercedes.
  • STC (System Traction Control) – the name of the mechanism is presented on Volvo vehicles.
  • TCS (Traction Control System) – Honda’s anti-vibration mechanism is called this way.

All these mechanisms against the towing of wheels are identical in principle to the action and the functional. Differences only in their designation.

Before considering the action of anti-towing systems, let us turn to the history and the prerequisites for creating anti-towing.

The historical information about the anti-slip control ASC

The origins of designing systems against the towing of driving wheels take their toll on railway vehicles. Skidding is a typical phenomenon at the beginning of the movement of locomotives with heavy convoys. Therefore, such mechanisms appeared more than a hundred years ago in the design of American locomotives. The system worked as follows: anti-towing compared the speed of rotation of pairs of runners and driving wheels, given the diameter of the rim. In the situation of acceleration of the moving elements, the balancing of the system was violated. In this regard, the anti-towage worked and opened the cylinder blowdown valve, which caused a reduction in pressure.

Over time, towing control systems were used in electromechanical performance on electric locomotives. There have been attempts to exploit them on cars of the early twentieth century, but they have not gained popularity. The fact is that cars of those years did not have such power. In addition, tires have been used and improved protectors, which enhances grip on the road.
As the development of powerful engines and the creation of automatic gearboxes the interest in anti-towing resumed. In the thirties of the twentieth century, Porsche produced a differential of increased friction.

Thanks to it the wheel rotates faster than the other which improves the contact with the road surface.

A modern example of the anti-lock system appeared thanks to German engineers in the late fifties. But the introduction of the mechanism was crowned with success in the late sixties with the advent of microelectronics.

The pioneer of anti-blocking was Buick in 1971. The developed computer recorded data on the speed of rotation of the wheels and reduced the turnaround of the engine to reduce the torque. In the European car, the anti-skidding systems were built into the BMW, together with an anti-lock mechanism. The Mercedes company also did not stand aside and introduced the C-class anti-towing in 1987.

A few years later the ASC moved to racing Formula 1. The team, which first used the mechanism against towing, became Ferrari in the nineties and was used until 2008.

In mass production, the anti-slip control was introduced in the early nineties and is used as an element of system additional security. Every modern car or motorcycle that is manufactured goes with this mechanism.

Thus, the age-old period of the creation of the anti-tow system led to an improved technology against drifts.

ASC system

The internal content of the mechanism is similar to the anti-lock system of wheels, but has an extended structure. In addition to electrical sensors, controls and modulators, the anti-towing structure is equipped with additional engine controls, a pressure source for the brake fluid and a network of solenoid valves. Note that sensors of ASC mechanisms are more sensitive a couple of times, and control blocks are produced with extended memory and monitoring functions.

The control stabilization system can be switched off, but the anti-lock on the wheels will be in operation.

Principle of ASC operation

The mechanism of ASC is designed to prevent towing vehicles at all speed modes:

  • Less than 80 kilometers per hour, torque is supplied by braking the drive wheels.
  • Above 80 kilometers per hour reduces the torque transmitted from the engine.

Thanks to the electro sensors, the control element monitors the parameters of the high-speed mode of the drive wheels in the conditions of vehicle acceleration. If the speed of distillation on one wheel increases (a sign of towing), the control element reduces the thrust or brakes the “fast” wheel. To reduce cravings, the following methods are used:

  • It stops the formation of a spark in the engine cylinders.
  • Reducing fuel delivery to the cylinders.
  • The throttle is covered.
  • The ignition timing is changed.

To maintain traction from the surface of the carriageway, the system increases the torque on the opposite wheel, produces a brake.

To monitor and counter drifts, the system analyzes the following characteristics:

  • The trajectory of movement of vehicles.
  • Parameters of sliding of driving wheels.
  • Data on the high-speed mode of movement of vehicles.
  • Acceleration of driving wheels.

That is, based on these parameters, the anti-tow mechanism selects brake pressure control or torque control in the engine.

Features of driving with ASC

As mentioned above, the anti-tow mechanism works always, but can be turned off at will of the driver. Using the security system, you need to pay attention to two circumstances:

Anti-slip during the formation of skidding itself will prevent an accident. Do not interfere with her work: turn the steering wheel from side to side and press on the brake lever.

It must be realized that the anti-slip mechanism does not work miracles on bends. Anti-towing is unlikely to save you from skidding if you enter the turn at high speed. Relying on the ASC, you should not make steep maneuvers on the icy surface at a speed of 120 kilometers per hour. Even the most intelligent electrical system can not deceive the laws of physics. In such situations, you are guaranteed to break into the ditch, which can lead to injuries or even death.

Of course, the system is limited in the repertoire of situations when it can help. In some circumstances, the mechanism on the contrary prevents. It is a question of drifts of rear wheels on front-wheel-drive cars. In theory, you need to increase the traction of the front wheels, but the system does just the opposite – reduces the speed of rotation of the driving wheels, and the car begins to enter. Even experienced drivers can not do anything in this situation. Such situations are not great. And modern systems make fewer mistakes. Therefore, you need to be prepared for any circumstances.

What are the advantages of ASC?

Among the obvious advantages of the mechanism of stabilization can be identified:

  • Reduced damage to tires.
  • Increases the resource of the engine.
  • Provides reliability in entering corners on wet surfaces and in the winter.
  • Ensures the reliability of adhesion when the car starts to move on wet, snowy, icy surfaces.
  • Saves fuel.
  • Increased maneuverability.

But like any electronic system anti-slip control has its disadvantages.

Disadvantages of ASC:

Some drivers note that the system does not fully control the movement of the car itself.

In some cases, the performance of the engine is reduced.

Small system deficiencies do not prevent the spread of ASC setting mechanisms. They are introduced by most European and Asian vehicle manufacturers. Such safety systems will be superfluous for drivers without experience. In addition, experienced drivers can turn off the anti-slip function (which is not recommended), if necessary.

ASC systems show high efficiency on the roads and are recognized as an important invention of the century. It increases safety on the roads and saves lives on a daily basis. In some countries, anti-towing is required to be put on the car without exceptions.

As a conclusion, we should note that at the present stage of development of security systems for a car the more perfect one does not exist. Do not neglect the anti-slip control mechanism. “Smart” system is always on the alert, does not confuse the pedals and will do what is required. It can save a life, and at times and not one.
