Electronic Stability Program

The ESP is the main component of the module to avoid dangerous conditions and road accidents. The abbreviation ESP, formed from the English words Electronic Stability Program. This mechanism has another, less common, name – the system of dynamic stabilization.

In addition to the abbreviated name of the ESP, there may be other variations: ASC, VDC, ESC, CST, PCS, DSM, DSC. This is the name of the same function in the vehicle, which differs from ESP only by the developer.

The ESP is used to prevent loss of balance of the vehicle in the event of critical situations on the road, which can lead to accidents. For example, when the car steeply enters the snow-covered highway. Thanks to the system of road-holding stability the car drives a specific line.

The ESP includes several modules:

  • TSC.
  • EDS.
  • ABS.
  • EDB.

Several parts of the structure are used for the stable operation of the ESP:

  • Remote control module.
  • Hydraulic control module.
  • Meter for determining the rotational speed.
  • Meter for determining the position of the tilt of the steering wheel.
  • Measuring instrument for determining the pressure in the braking system.
  • Meter for determining acceleration.

The work of the meters is monitored by the electronic control unit, and they, while on, constantly analyze the state of affairs on the road and the state of the vehicle.

The leader in the development of systems of exchange rate stability is the German company “Bosch”. It offers solutions for automotive concerns and car owners that have many additional features:

  • “Stop-forward.” This is an ESP option that works together with cruise control. Thanks to the sensors, the system automatically analyzes the distance to other vehicles, stops the vehicle automatically if the distance is unsafe.

The possibilities of electronics can vary depending on the manufacturer and model of the ESP.

The history of origin and the date of the first implementation of the ESP

The principle of the operation of electronics is based on the use of high-sensitivity sensors, which can independently determine many important parameters during driving. Control over the state and balance of the car on the road is constant. “Heart” ESP are several microprocessors with RAM. They process the signals transmitted from the sensors at an astonishing rate – up to 30 in just one second.

When the processor detects deviations in the indicators from the sensors, it takes control of the system of braking and fuel supply. Thus, the vehicle stabilizes on the road relative to the front wheels. However, ESP will not be able to detect a stable section of the route, so the driver has to take a part of the control on himself.

In the event that pushes the front wheels, ESP stability system applies the other way to preserve the balance of the vehicle: it includes a braking system on the rear wheels. This stabilizes the front of the car. When the back of the car is brought in, the system operates in reverse: it includes the brakes on the front wheels.

If the skid occurs on the rear and front wheels, based on the data received from the sensors, the ESP automatically decides which braking system should be used. The road-holding system is always on, regardless of the road mode or vehicle speed.

Advantages and disadvantages of the ESP

Advantages of the dynamic stabilization system can not be overestimated. However, it has both its pluses and minuses.
The advantages of the ESP are as follows:

  • Tracks and adjusts almost all the processes that occur in the car while driving.
  • Simplifies driving.
  • Huge computing power.
  • It is considered one of the most reliable active safety systems.
  • Combines several systems (for example, anti-lock and anti-skid).
  • Instant response to a critical situation.
  • In some models of the car ESP can turn on and off independently. The status of the dynamic stabilization system can be found using the indicator on the vehicle panel.

According to statistics, if every car had an ESP, one-third of all road accidents around the world could have been avoided.

The disadvantages of the ESP are:

  • The system is installed only in fairly expensive series of cars.
  • Sometimes an ESP can be powerless at a critical moment because it can not overcome the laws of physics.
  • In some cases, the system can make wrong decisions. For example, it can reduce the number of revolutions at a time when you do not need to do this.
  • If the car gets into a mud or a snowdrift, pulling it out with the stability system on will be problematic enough. However, this can be easily corrected by turning off the system electronics for a certain time.

The system of exchange rate stability is considered one of the most important achievements in the field of automotive industry. It ranks second in terms of ensuring the reliability of drivers and passengers on the road after the seat belts.

How popular Stabilization Program ESP with drivers and automakers

The effectiveness of the exchange security system is recognized throughout the world. In some European and Asian countries, the car can only be produced and operated if it is equipped with an ESP.

However, some drivers are skeptical about the system of exchange rate stability, since they consider that it only hinders. This statement applies to more experienced drivers whose actions are limited by the system. But, if desired, the system can be turned off at any time with the help of a special button with the burning indicator “ESP”, which is located on the panel.
