What is Parktronic?

The number of cars every year only grows. It’s leads to a reduction in available parking spaces, where vehicles are forced to stand tightly together. However, the ability to properly and accurately park, without hitting the nearest car at the same time, is a delicate matter, which can be handled only by very experienced drivers with many years of driving experience. To make it easier helps a special radar system, called parking assistant.

What is Parktronic?

Parktronic is a special device with several radars, which is fixed on the car. It is able to calculate the distance between the vehicle and other objects. The full name of parktronics is the parking radar or parctronic system. When the device detects an unacceptable distance, it’s signaled o the driver with sound. So each car owner can react in time to the situation and make a correction of the position of the vehicle at the parking place.

Parking radar has a complex design. The main part, which coordinates its work, is the control unit. Other important elements of the system are radars, which are responsible for analyzing the position of the vehicle.

Despite the fact that the name “radar” is firmly entrenched in relation to parktronics, in fact, it isn’t s
correct. After all, these details use sound, not radio waves, and therefore should be called sonar.

In addition, the common name of this device is a parking radar, and not a parking sensor. But in Russia, the second option was fixed, since the most popular manufacturer of this electronics in the country was the company “Parktronic”, which produces similar devices for the German automotive concern Mercedes Benz. For parking radar of other brands of cars, various other names can be used.

Today there are several types of parking radar, among which:

  • Tape. The special tapes with metal elements are used for detecting obstacles, . Tape are installed on the inside of the bumper. Tape parking radars operate on the principle of ultrasonic radars, but they avoid the so-called “dead zones” – areas that are inaccessible to the driver’s eyes.
  • Wireless. Despite the name, this species is practically no different from the traditional parking radar. The only difference is that when the control panel transmits a signal to the screen, no wires are used.
  • With built-in camera. As you can guess from the name, in addition to sensors for ultrasonic waves, this type of parking radar is additionally equipped with a video camera and a special display. In addition to audible warning, such a parking sensor transmits a video signal.

The choice of parktronics does not depend on the brand of the car, but only on the personal preferences and financial capabilities of the vehicle’s owner.

History of origin and date of first parktronics introduction.

At a time when electronic devices to facilitate parking were not yet invented, there were already their similarities. The most effective and relevant were mechanical sensors, the so-called carbillaries. These devices were made of a thin wire or spring. They were very much like the rigid whiskers of animals to establish contact with other objects – vibrissae. The carbillers were mounted on the lower part of the vehicle. At an unsafe distance, metal “whiskers” began to scratch the curb or asphalt, while producing sounds and thus warning drivers.

Also with the help of carbilleroff it was possible to determine the dimensions of the vehicle. To do this, they were installed not on the lower part of the body of the car, but on the side corners from the front.
First time electric parktronic was developed in 1978. Its principle of operation consisted in the use of ultrasonic waves with a vibration frequency of about 40 kHz. The sensors released ultrasound, which was reflected by objects nearby. The main unit of the device analyzed how fast the ultrasound flew, and determined the distance to the object.

Few years later, in 1992, the German car manufacturer Audi released and patented its own development – electromagnetic parktronic. Such a parking radar reacts to fluctuations in the values of the electromagnetic coupling.

At the moment both ultrasonic and electromagnetic parking radar is widely used by car owners around the world.

Basic principles of parktronics

In order to understand how it works and how to use the parking sensors, you need to understand its device.

The device of a parking radar includes:

  • Control block. Gets information about objects using a signal coming from the sensor. After that, gives the command to the device for the sound signal.
  • Sensors. Analyze and discover objects that can interfere with parking. The data is transferred to the control unit. Usually several sensors are placed on the car: from the rear and the front.
  • Device for the sound signal. It is located directly in the car. When an obstacle is detected, the driver is informed about it.
  • Some types of devices display the distance between the bumper and the obstacle.

The parking radar operates according to the following principle:

  • When radars are on, they are applying ultrasound. Waves fly forward and if they come across an obstacle, they are reflected and come back. The control unit calculates the time interval for which the ultrasonic wave is returned. Based on the time indicator, the distance of the object from the vehicle is calculated.
  • Most sensors are able to detect obstacles that are up to two meters from the installation site of the device. If the object interfering with parking is further away, the driver will easily detect it with the help of a rear-view mirror.
  • Parking radar starts to work only when the rear gear is engaged. In most cases, nonautomatic devices are used, since when moving through a populated area, the sensors will constantly react, transmit a signal while distracting and irritating the driver.

To prevent the driver from the obstacle, both sound and light can be used.

Pros and cons of parking sensors

Parktronic is quite simple and convenient device, which has practically no disadvantages. Parking radar will be useful for both experienced drivers and beginners.

The following advantages of parking sensors can be distinguished:

  • Easy to install and handle.
  • Allows you to overcome the fear of parking and driving from inexperienced drivers.
  • Significantly simplifies car parking.
  • It is irreplaceable in conditions of parking or driving in the area with reduced visibility.
  • Accuracy of detection of obstacles in the way of the car.
  • Possibility to save money for cosmetic repair of a car in case of collision with objects.
  • Some models of parktronics have additional functions.

However, there are several significant disadvantages of parking radars. The first is the probability that the device will not react to an obstacle. Usually this situation happens with such objects as:

  • thin objects (for example, bayonets or chains);
  • objects that have properties to absorb ultrasound (for example, clothing items, drifts);
  • objects below one meter in length or in height;
  • objects that have the properties of reflection of ultrasound. Provided that the returning waves ply to the sensor.

Another significant drawback is the probability that the parking radar will produce a false signal, which not only irritates, but also distracts the driver. It can happen for a number of reasons:

  • Contamination and snow on the sensor.
  • Towing a trailer on a vehicle.
  • Driving on a bumpy road.
  • Driving on a vehicle over rough terrain.
  • Operation the parking radar in bad weather conditions (rain, snow).
  • Parking in the territory with limited space. In this case, the parking sensor can give a false signal due to the echo effect.
  • Strong noise in the area of the sensors.
  • Working nearby devices that emit radio waves.

Also It should be borne in mind that parking radar can not detect obstacles and objects that are “under the wheels” of the car. So, they do not notice holes in the asphalt, garbage on the road and other.
Despite some shortcomings parktronic is one of the most reliable devices for parking.

How much is parktronic used by car drivers and automakers?

Parktronic is not an obligatory part of the car. However, most modern models from the leading manufacturers are still equipped with parktronics immediately at the factory.

More often parktronics are acquired by beginner drivers. It will help to overcome the fear of parking and driving in general. Also parking radar installs and drivers who can not “feel” the dimensions of their vehicle. Often parking sensors are equipped with cars with an elongated body, as well as all kinds of SUVs, minivans, pick-up trucks.
